X-Ray

• The faculty may want you to wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can easily move around.
• The faculty may also ask you to remove any jewellery or other metallic items from your body before your X-ray is taken.
• If your gastrointestinal tract is to be examined, the patient must fast for some time before the examination.
• Radiologists must be informed about any previous implants.
• If you are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, tell your doctor and our staff including our technologist. X-rays on pregnant women are avoided near the womb, though on occasion the health benefits of diagnosing and treating your condition may outweigh the risk. Your doctor and out technologist will discuss all your options with you.
• Children are also at greater risk from radiation, so there should be a clear medical reason for any child to receive an X-ray.
• We want your exam to be as comfortable and hassle-free as possible, so we provide all the information you’ll need to prepare before you arrive.

Preparing for your X-ray exam
Your physician or our staff will provide specific instructions to make you, as certain exams require different preparation. A typical X-ray exam requires no special preparation. Eating: If you are scheduled for a diagnostic X-ray using a contrast agent, you may be asked to refrain from eating before the exam. Check with your physician or call our office for instructions.

Ultrasound

• During an ultrasound, the faculty will ask you to remove any jewellery or other metallic items from your body before the procedure.
• The gel is applied to your skin to keep air pockets that can block the sound waves from forming.
• A trained technician presses a small, hand-held device, about the size of a bar of soap, against your skin over the area being examined, moving it as necessary to capture the image. The transducer sends sound waves into your body, collectssound waves that bounce back and sends them to a computer, which creates the images.

Preparation
ABDOMEN ULTRASOUND
• Nothing to eat, drink or chew 8 hours before the procedure.
• You may take your medications.

PELVIS / SONOHYSTEROGRAM – YOUR BLADDER MUST BE FULL FOR THE EXAM.
• Empty bladder 1 hour before the appointment. Do NOT urinate again until the exam is completed.
• 1 hour before the appointment, drink 32 oz. of water (4 glasses).

KIDNEY / BLADDER
• Drink 24 oz. of water 1 hour before the scheduled appointment.
• Do NOT urinate until the exam is completed.

ABDOMEN / PELVIS
• No food or fluid 8 hours before the exam.
• Drink 32 oz. of water (4 glasses) 1 hour before exam time.
• Do NOT urinate until the exam is completed.
• BREAST, THYROID, TESTICULAR, CAROTID AND VENOUS STUDIES
• No preparation is necessary.

Ultra Low Dose CT Scan

• The faculty may want you to wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can easily move around.
• The faculty may also ask you to remove any jewellery or other metallic items from your body before your X-ray is taken.
• Refrain from eating or drinking for a few hours before your scan.
• Depending on the area of the body being imaged, you may be asked to drink a flavoured mixture called contrast that will aid in the evaluation of your stomach and intestines.
• While the exam is being done, all you need to do is relax and remain as still as possible. You may be asked to hold your breath for short periods of time.
• Please alert our staff if you have any allergies, asthma or any kidney problems at the date of scheduling and again upon arrival at the office.
• Certain types of studies also require an IV contrast material, which will be administered through a vein (usually in your arm), once you are in the exam room.
• If your exam requires an IV contrast material to highlight certain parts of your body, you may feel a warm sensation throughout your body and a metallic taste in your mouth once the IV is administered.
• A CT examination usually takes between five minutes and half an hour.

Preparation
CT ABDOMEN / PELVIS WITH CONTRAST OR COMBINED
• Do not eat or drink anything 4 hours before the exam.
• Studies of the abdomen and pelvis with or without contrast require patients to drink oral contrast after they arrive at the office for their appointment. Allow an additional 1 hour to drink the oral contrast.
CT IVP
• Do not eat anything 4 hours before the exam.
• Allow an additional 30 minutes to drink water before exam time.

CT WITH CONTRAST (CTA EXAMINATIONS (CT ANGIOGRAPHY STUDIES), BRAIN CT WITH CONTRAST, NECK CT WITH CONTRAST, CHEST CT WITH CONTRAST, SPINE CT WITH CONTRAST, OTHER CT WITH CONTRAST)
• Do not eat anything 2 hours before the exam.
CT NON-CONTRAST (HEAD, SINUS, CHEST, SPINE & KUB)

• No preparation is necessary.

Bone Densitometry

Intervention Procedures

• Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before the exam. Medications may be taken with a small amount of water.
• Stop taking Aspirin or aspirin-containing products at least two days before the procedure unless specifically.

Procedure:

• Please arrive at least 20 minutes before your radiology exam appointment. If you must cancel or reschedule, call us at least 24 hours in advance.
• If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, let your doctor know. In most cases, X-ray exams will not be done on a pregnant patient.
• Tell us if you are breastfeeding.
• If you have diabetes and taking insulin, ask your physician for specific instructions regarding the dosages for the day of your examination.
• If you are on a medically-ordered, fluid-restricted diet or if you have kidney failure or a kidney transplant, discuss radiology exam preparation with your physician, who may alter your instructions. Your physician should inform us if any change is made in the preparation.
• If your radiology exam requires you to fast beforehand and is scheduled for the afternoon, you may have 8 -12 ounces of water around 7:00 AM. Otherwise, don’t eat, drink, smoke or chew before the exam.
• If you are planning on taking sedation medication, please arrive one (1) hour before your appointment and do not start taking the medication until after you have completed the paperwork on the site. Please arrange for someone to drive you home from the exam.
